Dear Luminita and Dear All,

Thank you very much, Luminita to take the trouble to do yet another BX. You really deserve a long holiday after all the work.
here are a few comments on the seed I donated to the BX. wc stands for wild collected, always sustainable.

Albuca fragrans
winter growing, summer dormant, fairly tall yellow flowered plant. The interesting feature is that the tip of the inflorescence which is still in bud is nodding downward but straightens when the flowers open. The less interesting feature is that I could not detect any fragrance whatsoever. Sow now

Anemone palmata wc
A common plant here on calcareous soil, shiny bright yellow flowers that look like a daisy at first glance. Sow immediately, seed cannot be stored any longer, I very much hope it is still viable. Keep moist and cool after sowing or best outside at fluctuating temperatures if you live in a mediterranean climate. Winter growing, spring flowering, summer dormant. Forms a very brittle horizontal thin round rhizome.

Dipcadi serotinum wc
modest mediterranean bulb with brownish flowers. winter growing, summer dormant, sow now

Gladiolus illyricus wc
from my own land. winter growing, spring flowering and summer dormant. beautiful en masse, forms a pink haze. Will not thrive in too much competition.

Hippeastrum papilio
from true species, mother plants purchased with the information it was grown from wild seed. Hand pollinated. Short and not complete summer dormancy.

Hippeastrum red, spec? Hybr?
both Hippeastrum seed were harvested in summer, should germinate well with water flotation method, don't store them any longer

Iris reichenbachii
from my garden, sow immediately, but may be in prolonged dormancy like many Iris, so patience required.....

Iris sicula
rare very tall Iris (flower about 1,5m above ground) looks like a tall form of Iris pallida, pale grey-blue in spring, attractive accent plant.

Iris xiphium wc
forms large stands near my home, very beautiful blue. Germinates well, sow immediately. But may need several years to flowering size. An easy plant and one of the parents of the so called Dutch Iris. Will hybridize with them. Winter growing, summer dormant, is baked hot where it naturally grows.

Lachenalia salteri
Identitiy not 100%, tall spikes of purplish flowers in various shades. Nice, vigorous and easy, self seeds into other pots. That is how I got it from pots saved from the collection of the late John Lavranos. I either bag or remove the spent flowers.

Lilium ex 'White Triumphator'
Phantastic longiflorum hybrid, not sure if it comes true form seed. My mother plant has resisted wind and very hot weather in full flower, seed is of immediate germination and best sown in spring

Narcissus bulbocodium wc
nice and early, grows in masses in some places, mostly on slate. Does not like competition from vigorous plants, long grass or Oxalis pes caprae, winter growing, late winter flowering and summer dormant, sow immediately

Nepeta tuberosa wc
very interesting native plant of dry exposed habitats in sparse vegetation on red soil. Very stiff and upright up to 1,2m tall. Dense blue inflorescences give an interesting vertical accent. May require some lime to grow well. Winter growing, summer dormant, sow now, best outside, requires full light. I do not know how hardy it might be.

Pelargonium fulgidum
from a plant in my garden. basically winter growing but with small amounts of summer water very long flowering period into late summer. smallish but very bright red flowers in umbels. stays partly green this way but growth takes place in winter. Sow now.

Scilla peruviana
from my garden from a good form called 'Grand Bleu' from Bulb D'Argence. Sow now, germinates very well but needs time to reach flowering size. Bulbs start early, autumn-winter-spring growing spring flowering for a relatively long time, deep blue. Is also a native plant here on heavy clay soil but the native ones are not as deep blue as this form. Has started with very welcome self seeding in my garden.

Tropaeolum hookerianum
originally from Chileflora. This is the best blue Tropaeolum with me, better and easier than T. azureum. Sow immediately, soak one night, germinates well under fluctuating temperatures or best outside if you live in a mediterranean climate. Beware of slugs! flowers the first year from seed. keep going as long as possible in spring by keeping it as cool as possible and partly shaded. Winter growing summer dormant. This one has not skipped a season with me like some other Chielan Tropaeolums like to do.

Veltheimia bracteata

Veltheimia bracteata yellow
Both Veltheimia seeds were given to me by a friend from Spain, she collected a very large amount in her garden and uses them as ground cover in partial shade. Veltheimia seed germinates easily, seedlings sometimes do not go dormant in summer so do not dry them off brutally. responds well to fertilizer but will still take some years to reach flowering size. A rewarding plant, does not like full sun. Also makes a very long lived potted house plant.

Watsonia marginata
This is the star of late spring in my bulb and succulent border. Very tall (up to 2m) spikes which stand straight but not necessarily upright, it forms a huge bouquet of pink flowers leaning to all sides. The spikes are so stiff that they swing in the wind like steel springs. Flowers for a long time but dies completely down in summer. Magnificent with purple Tetradenia rivularis. Sow now, winter growing and summer dormant.

Good luck and much fun!

Uli
