I enter this discussion with considerable fear, but ...

Fortunately, this is not a binary decision. We can, and in my opinion
should, do both - maintain the mailing list as it is (though perhaps
continuing to seek a better host*), and have a Facebook group. Both have
advantages and disadvantages**; let people use whatever set is in their
comfort zone - let's be inclusive, not exclusive. We're always looking
to reach new ... geophytaphiles?, and Facebook, and social media in
general, is a good way to do that.

This debate seems to recur regularly in most groups of which I'm a part,
but the hybrid approach generally seems to work well, and there is some
synergy. Yes, you need admins for both, but I've been the admin for a
botanically oriented mailing list for almost 30 years now, surviving
several changes of host, and also administrate a FB group, and once you
get things organized and learn the ropes, neither seems to take up much
time. (It does require considerable patience and tact at times, which is
a real stretch for me, but I try to view it as self-improvement.)

* - I must give kudos to David Pilling and the list admins for PBS; they
do an excellent job for a list as large, active, and diverse as PBS, and
the problems with some domains are hardly their fault.

** - I won't waste space and time listing them here, but they both do
have both, and I'll bore you at length with them if you make me!
