Here in Arizona, USA, I have grown U. maritima (now Drimia maritima: see the wiki) for years in the ground and in shade. They've increased and now number about 35-40 of all sizes. I've never used any kind of fertilizer but then I've never had any in pots. They remain completely dry all summer and I begin watering only when they begin to leaf out after they've flowered. Normally not all of them flower. Never have they been bothered by any wildlife either. Boyce Thompson Arboretum near Superior, AZ, at about the same elevation as our property, has hundreds of them and with so many trees, they are never in full sun and have never received any special horticulture. I know this because I served on its Collections Committee for years.
