Having a pond is a source of constant joy. We have two big connected ponds with mud bottom, they're an extension of an old stream, so there is some water flow, but it freezes during winter. Generally speaking bulbs have never done well in the pond or even close to it, but we do have yellow flags (Iris pseudacorus) and calla palustris, and boy do we have them. Calla is just about manageable if we remove as much as we can in the spring, before growth. Yellow flags don't spread as fast, the problem with them is sheer weight, reducing them is a major exercise. So my advice from the North is to worry mostly about what not to put in your pond!
