Brian, There are large robust clumps of E p e in the Royal Botanical gardens in Edinburgh growing in a wet facing border adjacent to the glasshouses. I bought three bulbs of E p e two years ago. They were some 12 cms in diameter and each one had 3 to 5 daughter bulbs firmly attached round the base. They were planted into a large ornate ceramic pot on receipt. All my Eucomis (Eucomi?) spend the winter in their pots in an unheated Keder greenhouse and go out round the house once the danger of frost has passed (May?) and don't seem to mind the sudden change of environment. I am 25 miles inland in Aberdeenshire in Scotland. The E p e pot was too large and awkward to move once full and had to remain in the tunnel. The first year I got three flower spikes and 12 subsidiary rosettes; this year six flower spikes and 22 subsidiary noses. The plants were about 1.5 metres high. I don't harvest seed but a lot gets spilt overwinter in the tunnel and germinates in the oddest of places; always Eucomis bicolor which also occasionally germinates outside. Seed is set by other species and hybrids but has so far never germinated of its own accord. It grows ok but not massive in stature, and does not increase much in number by clumping and I suspect wants higher temperatures than we get in general. This and several other Eucomis, probably all hybrids, grow ok here and most produce seed but I get very few self-sown plants, and none so far round around the E p e Is it because it is too cool here before the seeds rot. Should I collect them now and sow in the warm? I have grown Eucomis before from seed but just odd hybrid? plants from seed acquired from the ground somewhere in the past. Brian Whyer, SE UK, wet and cold, frost last night, but rarely serious over the last few years. Snow a rarity now it seems. Rainfall ~20" pa. _______________________________________________ pbs mailing list pbs@lists.pacificbulbsociety.net http://lists.pacificbulbsociety.net/cgi-bin/… Unsubscribe: <mailto:pbs-unsubscribe@lists.pacificbulbsociety.net> _______________________________________________ pbs mailing list pbs@lists.pacificbulbsociety.net http://lists.pacificbulbsociety.net/cgi-bin/… Unsubscribe: <mailto:pbs-unsubscribe@lists.pacificbulbsociety.net>
