I saw them growing in tufts of grass among rocks in and along a river in South Africa right after the New Year. They roots would be in wet ground and if the river rose they would likely be periodically inundated. They also were in bloom and that would be equivalent to early July here. It did appear that the flowers were mostly among the last for the season (but they had plenty of them) but I was surprised to see them blooming so late, as here in NY they are fall bloomers. They will grow fine in garden soil but they do hate to be too dry and here they benefit from wood chip mulch in winter.
