Were these plants growing together in nature, or in cultivation? Mary Gerritsen, 2007:54, mentions "the rare natural hybrid Calochortus amabilis x C. tolmiei" as being "very similar to C. pulchellus." In my bulb house I have an example of what is probably another natural hybrid, C. monophyllus x C. albus, mentioned by Gerritsen 2007:68. She doesn't describe it, but my plant has numerous pale yellow flowers with pink zones around the gland. C. amabilis is also growing nearby, but the coloration suggests to me that C. monophyllus (which is bright yellow with darker zones) is the seed parent. The habit of the hybrid is like that of C. monophyllus, but the pedicels are not quite so erect. C. monophyllus has upfacing flowers, while C. amabilis flowers are pendent. C. pulchellus is also growing nearby, but I don't think it is involved with this hybrid.
