Ants do farm scale and mealybugs, which can be minor or not, but a simple solution to all ants, mostly those focused on damaging wood in a building foundation is to use a formula of half sugar and half borax (20 Mule Team) and sprinkle it sparingly all around foundations in April or whenever it warms enough for them to start moving. If you do this every year, you are much less likely to have to call pest control. Other "bugs" can be controlled also. It's very targeted to just those that invade buildings and I never bother ants who mind their manners and live elsewhere. And I hope that my cyclamen will start popping up in various places in another couple of years. They're quite amenable to careful mowing by setting the mower higher than most folks do. I also mow as much as possible in the evenings or early mornings when it's cool to avoid snakes and other creatures who like to sun themselves.
