Myrmechocory is the fifty-cent word for seed dispersal by ants. Elaiosomes are the Little (Big) Macs the plant makes as part of the seed, so the junk-food-crazed ants will lug the seeds down into their nests. The ants pig out on the elaiosomes and dispose of the seeds in their nutrient-rich underground middens or toss the seeds out of the nest but away from the plant. See, junk food really is a food group. And yes, I had to look those words up.  Jane Sargent
