I visited Bill Welch's nursery some years ago to buy bulbs for my brother's garden near Monterey. He was very welcoming and enthusiastic about the plants, which were growing in field rows. It was the first time I had seen Haemanthus in flower, an amazing sight. At that time he was selling his plants mostly through farmers' markets. He obviously had a profound devotion to his work with bulbs. As with so many who have gone before us, his legacy flowers on.
