Forwarded from the old PBS list From: Jim Barton Michael: I am growing Calochortus and Brodiaea in native soil along the driveway on my property west of Modesto. The driveway is raised above the fields and the edges slope toward the fields, the edges drop about 18 inches in 10 feet. I tried mulching them last fall, a big mistake. Invertebrates line in the mulch and love to munch the new growth. Finally I raked the mulch away from the new growth and it mostly cured the problem. I just plant them in native soil and leave them alone. However I do save seed each year and start it in pots to replace bare spots as needed, a continuing effort. See my previous remarks on the hammer drill as to how I replant.
