Hi Jim
Your comments about a robust drill are important. I random planted 100+ spring bulbs in rough grass last winter. Good soil but very stony and who wants to lift all that turf. Inevitably random depth too but no problem. Filled the holes with old potting soil. After ~80 holes the drill started smoking and it had a rest for a couple of hours. Mine was a mains powered drill and I used a 1 inch masonry drill bit. I can buy specialist very open spiral planting drills (augers) here (UK) but at a much higher price than the masonry bit and nowhere near as robust.

For those without hammer dill I experimented with a cordless drill and a masonry bit. This will work if you can get the proper sized bits and the drill has the power to do the job. I don’t why it took so long to figure this out. Jim Barton _______________________________________________
