Uli Urban wrote about his dream of a seasonal pond using winter rainwater: "Is this a realistic concept? Has anybody done it and can share the experience? Problems with mosquitoes before drying out? Would be another topic for the bulb garden because I think many members of the society live in winter rain countries. " Yes, mosquitoes would love the pond, but it is possible to prevent them by using a product that floats on the surface and releases Bacillus thuringensis (Bt), which kills the larvae. They are called "mosquito dunks" here. I imagine they're available in Europe too. Another method I've used is mosquito fish (I think they are Gambusia), which we can obtain from our county agency. Of course, they would not survive a dry summer, but they are very inexpensive and also quite small. Jane McGary Portland, Oregon, USA now experiencing a VERY wet winter
