Kipp, you're not the only one to think so. The vitaceae is among the most frequently suggested families for my mystery plant.
And your comment "or maybe it's a sport with stunted leaf tips" sums up my initial impression of the leaves.
One aspect of this which really puzzles me is that this plant, whatever it is, is very ornamental. It's hard for me to believe that it exists only in the garden in which the photos were taken. It's hard to believe that it has not been passed around a lot, with or without a name.
