I've germinated large seeds (mostly bulb seeds, but also things like peonies) in small ziplock bags for years. Some bulbs take years to germinate - some colchicums have germinated for me in 8 years, and some haven't done so a few years past that- so there is no way that those seeds would come up if I had sown them in a pot. My "weeds" here are big conifers and giant ferns and seedpots are prime growing space for them. I moisten the peat-based compost I use, and it rarely needs more water, but it is easy to add a wee bit if necessary. As soon as I see germination in the bags, I transfer them to a pot. When I go away on a long trip, I string the little bags up so that anything that germinates while I'm gone will have sufficient light to grow. I don't put them where the sun will shine on them, as I don't want them to cook. Diane Whitehead Victoria, B.C., Canada cool mediterranean climate mild dry summers, mild rainy winters
