If a rare, threatened, or otherwise "red listed" species is hypothetically used in hybridization or a unique form selected and subsequently named, does it lose its protected status? Some threatened non-geophytes have been used in this manner and then mass distributed such as some species of Echinacea as well as Armeria pseudarmeria (Ballerina series), the latter "red listed" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
