Another crude but effective option for killing insects is orange oil. Unlike those nasty pyrethrins that can kill your pets, limonene is not a nerve agent but it dissolves chitin which us deuterostomes don't usually have. I have sprayed it on my cat-food bowl to kill and repel ants. It is quick and lethal and works a lot like a hammer that won't affect plants or vertabrates. It is sold with an emulsifier and also used for cleaning so don't use it in cooking and dilute it a lot if you wash with it.
