Regarding showing size scale in photos: This spring I wanted to illustrate a very tiny form of Fritillaria affinis (seed collected on serpentine in the Siskiyou Mountains), and I photographed it with a 6-inch/15-cm ruler, black scale on white plastic. I secured a ground pin (heavy U-shaped wire) to the back of the ruler so I could set it in the soil beside the plants. I got some of these short rulers, strangely enough, as packing material in something else I ordered. You can buy similar ones at sewing supply departments.
