I've received seeds from S. Africa in which the hypocotyl split withing the seed and, being in the mail no chloroplasts had formed so what was an emerging leaf could be mistaken for a root. The shoot that is clearest is definitely the root and you can make out where the bulb will form at its base. Randy Monterey Bay Area, California
