Diane, I wouldn't try to learn all the functions. That's like learning all the features of Microsoft Word. It would take you 10,000 years. But the waypoint feature is a gem for plant people. I carry a GPS and a little pocket digital voice recorder. Each time I save a waypoint, I tell the voice recorder the number and what is at that location. It is incredibly easy.
