Hello,
Amaryllis rootactivity starts as soon as there is humidity and lower 
temperatures (here early september). So get the bulbs in place  BEFORE that 
period.  An other advantage that you may have flowering instantly after 
planting. Even so the bulb may require up to 2 years to become well 
established  to allow forming a net work of fleshy roots.
