The plunge method described by Carol in her original post is the classic method for growing bulbs in pots over winter, and really cannot be bettered. However, it's important to have perfect drainage so there's no excessive moisture in the pots, and to make sure that they're suitably deep to be reasonably well insulated from the worst cold.
