"Boyce Tankersley" <btankers@chicagobotanic.org> wrote about diagnostic photos. Over in the SRGC Forum (Scottish Rock Garden Society), someone pointed out a most useful web site of flora in Germany, a good example where the photos are specifically taken to help illustrate differences in the species, and as well, the flowers are arranged on a webpage in a sort of botanical key. Check it out with a genus like Viola, go here: http://blumeninschwaben.de/artenverzeichnis1.htm Then select Vi-Z in the right block (latin names), then select one of the Viola species links (give it a minute or so as it loads the whole thing). By the way, if you use Google Toolbar, you can set it to automatically translate the German to English. The site a cool example of a visual photo-based key of sorts.
