What makes erythroniums bloom?

Erythronium helenae has four flowers on a single stem here this year, 
and probably had the same number last year. It's hard to tell for sure, 
but the photos on the PBS wiki seem to show at least three flowers on 
some plants.

Originally from Jane McGary, this one has quickly become my favorite 
erythronium. It's been fine outside, unprotected, for the past three 
winters. Alas, no increase.
