A few further remarks/factoids regarding the narcissus flies: 1. They have a distinctive whine on the wing. It may be feasible to offer children a bounty on each dead one brought in, since the whine makes it fairly easy to distinguish the villains from bees, hover flies, and suchlike similar winged critters. 2. They are not restricted to Amaryllidaceae: I once found one chewing up a Hyacinthus bulb, one of the standard large flowered cultivars sold widely. 3. They are esp strongly attracted to Chlidanthus. -- Rodger Whitlock Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Maritime Zone 8, a cool Mediterranean climate on beautiful Vancouver Island
