Is eremurus high or low water?

I can add my New Jersey two cents to the discussion of Eremurus.

I planted about four different species and they all have disappeared
over a three year period. They were planted on a bed of gravel to
assist in drainage and I even covered them to keep them dry while
dormant. I seem to remember that they thrive in Utah with cold winters
and hot dry summers and there may be a commercial cut flower production
operation there.
