Thanks for your comments, Hans-Werner. The photos were beautiful. I'll now remove "cold winters" from the prescription for Amaryllis belladonna. Yet knowing that the plants you cite have minimum winter temperatures of 13 degrees C only deepens my curiosity. There are many places in eastern North America which can provide winter temperatures above 13 degrees C and provide summer temperatures over 30 degrees C easily. Yet Amaryllis belladonna does not thrive. There must be more to the puzzle. Jim McKenney
