I have heard many times that Sternbergia lutea doesn't set seed in several places, mainly in colder climates, while some say S. lutea angustifolia is a sterile form or hybrid. Indeed I have sent fertile seed bearing bulbs to various people in northen Italy and Uk and all didn't get any seed.
