Hi Julia ,
I dont know the book of Gerald Durell - but I know from friends that in
Corfu grows only Cyc. hederifolium .
I know Crete well and there growing :
Cyc. persicum
Cyc. creticum
Cyc. graecum
Cyc. graecum ssp. candidum
Cyc. hederifolium ssp. confusum
Youre website with flowers of Crete is really wonderful - but I missing
pictures of Paeonia clusii and all the Tulips .
With best wishes
Hans

Betreff: [pbs] Gerald Durrell's Corfu

I was interested to read a reference to cyclamen growing wild on Corfu as
described in Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals. This was the
very passage that hooked me on the notion of living in Crete and made me
(many years later) sell up and retire (joke) here.

Spurred on by the delightfully exotic and humorous books, I visited Greece -
Corfu - first in the 1960s and was entranced to find a woodland dell full of
Cyclamen persicum(?) - I didn't know one Cyclamen from the other in those
days. To add to the adventure, tortoises were rumaging amongst the leaves -
very exciting for a girl brought up in Birmingham, England.

Now, all these years later I am still excited to find Cyclamen growing wild
and particularly love Cyclamen creticum.

Julia
