Dear Angelo: Many thanks for the info on Iris orientalis. Here in very rich alkaline soils, year round rains, app. zone 9 b in winter and zone 10 in summer, they and a number of hybrid Spurias seem to suggest a colder origin, as you point out. They sprout in early winter, flower in spring for a long period and remain in full growth for the summer and early autumn. As pointed out in another message, they hate being divided and flower very abundantly when left to become extensive clumps. They also seem impervious to long very hot summers.
