Hi Jim:
         It all makes sense tho. Organic gardening implies adding enormous 
amounts of organic matter to the soil, etc., etc. Adding sulphur to the soil 
would produce important amounts of sulphidric that would poison and kill all 
sorts of plants. Hence this advice comes from practical experience. As you 
say powdered sulphur DOES lower the pH but in a more stable, less organic 
soils.
