Diane, I have Lucifer in several places in my OH garden. One that I have is growing through a peony ring (not just the ring form but those with cross hatching to hold everything in place). This one never flops and always stands tall, right through winter. I'm not sure if the birds eat the seeds or not but it is a very architectural plant and in the winter garden I'll take all I can get. The rings can be purchased for $10-$20 depending on size for the clump. The other location is on the back side of the same bed behind some large Viburnum shrubs and it is not staked. It falls right over into the lawn and gets pretty shredded by those mowing. Since it is never seen other than those mowing, I don't really worry about it. One other item that would help you, dig up the clump and plant it deeper. The strength of the soil around the emerging stems will add support. Hope this helps.
