Welcome to John Manion. John, for your area (Martha's Vineyard off the coast of New England), you can get some good suggestions from Howard Clase's article "Growing small bulbs in Newfoundland," which appeared in the winter 2005 issue of the Rock Garden Quarterly. I see that you're a NARGS member, so you should have a copy. NARGS, which originated in New England, has a particularly large and active membership there still. I know very little about plants in Oaxaca, but Frank Callahan's chapter on Calochortus in "Bulbs of North America" mentions a number of species in that genus which grow in Mexico, including that area.
