Sprekelia howardii

Doug,

A little trick I learned from someone (Doug, also) who grows cycads/palms - to stop plants from going too deep into the ground is to plant them on top of a slab of something. The something will depend on the plant. What Doug did was plant a Macrozamia (Australian cycad) on top of a large stepping stone. The plant has a tendency to pull itself deep into the ground to protect itself from periodic fire. So, try digging a larger hole than required for your sprekelia and put a large flat slab of something underneath it.

If you try it, keep us posted as to if it works or not. I personally haven't tried it as all my stuff is in pots. I would like to figure out how to keep the gladiolus from getting out of the bottom of the pots. Hey, I just remembered, didn't someone say they used mesh? I'll see if I can't find some.
