I think it was in 1989 that Paul Christian gave a wild demonstration of bulb propagation at Edmonds Community College near Seattle, where Dan Hinkley (now of Heronswood Nursery) taught horticulture and arranged a summer study weekend every year. Paul used big vegetables as his subjects so that everyone in the audience could see what he was doing. For instance, he used a big cabbage to show how to scoop out the base of a hyacinth. He was whacking away with his machete, and the stage ended up looking like a salad. I've looked up my notes on his talk, and I just put down the serious information. I didn't make notes of the vegetables. Maybe someone else saw that talk, and remembers. If pbs wants a dynamic speaker, see if Paul still gives that one. I will put together my notes from Paul's talk, from a twin-scaling demo by John Grimshaw and last weekend's talk by Janis Ruksans, and post it in a while. Diane Whitehead Victoria BC Canada
