Hi, I got a few seeds of Pyrolirion boliviense.

They are a bit winged and I am told that this particular Pyrolirion grows in pure sand in a rather dry climate, even during the rainy season, so floating is not encouraged.

I sowed some in a pot with a very sandy mix and put the pot inside a bag to reduce evaporation, nothing has happened after two weeks.

Does anyone have any experience with Pyrolirion sp.?

Thanks

@Ina Crossley (New Zealand)

has posted information about the genus here on PBS, including raising from seed, but not in detail.

Just in case no-one else can contribute any experience.

I have sown seed of Pyrolirion, don't remember the species by using the water flotation method. Excellent results with fresh seed. I would think that you have more control over mildew and rot with the flotation method rather than in a humid plastic bag.

Ok, thanks to both.

According to the guy who sent them to me, flotation does not work well with P. boliviense.

I looked at the pot this morning and saw two seedlings, so I'll take the pot out of the bag to ensure aeration.

He also sent Clinanthus boliviensis and I floated six to have a try, and after a week there is one root emerging.

I find that many seedlings do well in a pot in a bag with the bag completely open, or crumpled over - there is ventilation but the RH around the seedlings stays elevated. So much depends on other conditions though - pot, compost, temperature..............
