Messages - Bulbous

I have a range of S. African bulbs ranging in size from 1" to over 12"  I have both summer and winter growers in the same bed (by mistake but it is what it is) but there are only few summer growers.  I do not have to water in the winter during our rainy season here in Santa Barbara but I do so in the summmer for my summer growers I just try to water only them but Ik still get some splashing and runoff onto the winter guys.  Generaly they all have taken to that system and are growing vigorously.  It is becoming crowded so I just dug a couple of the small B. Disticha (3") to take for Lotusland this afternoon.  Given where we live sunshine is the order of the day so I have no light problem but as Parks says they do need a lot of light.

My B. haemanthoides and Brunsvigia josephinae and  B. bosmaniaeare about to go dormant and I will need to lift a couple because one is getting a very large spread.

With the right condition these things are relatively easy to grow.

Does anyone have any tipa on B. radula?  It is now to ma and is is a very small seedling.

I have a fairly god size fluted pot that I'm going to plant this little guy along with another unknown that is in full flower (white) and is only 1 inch tall. I'll be posting a picture of that one in a couple of days.

You are right about the gophers.  You sent me a collection a few years back and the gophers got every one of them.

Enjoy the rain, we are still dry here in Santa Barbara and we might have a dry year given the conditions.

Mystery Bulbs / A little unknown gem
November 09, 2024, 09:48:42 AM
This little guy popped up in a pot I had thought was empty.  I'm not sure which BX I received it from but it is an interesting little thing.  I'm not sure if it is even a bulb!

Anyone have an idea of what it might be?

General Discussion / Odd inflorescence behavioir
July 18, 2024, 12:37:05 PM
Last year both of my large B. josephinae developed a pronounced curve in their inflorescence stalks.  One is in the front garden and one in the rear.  The front one is pictured. Why they did this is a mystery to me.  Has anyone else experienced this?  The one in back grew nearly horizontal to the ground after emerging.

My Boophone haemanthoides have suddenly decided to bloom but this bulb has 2 flowering stalks!  This is a first for me.

Thank you so much Robin.  I'm wondering how to fit all of that description on my tiny plant tags ;)

They do well here in Santa Barbara although they are now dormant.  Make sure you leave room for the leaves to spread out. I didn't and now have to move a couple of things. The picture was taken in early October.

Mystery Bulbs / Lovely white ?

This was part of a bulb exchange a while back but I cannot recall which.  The list had Babiana ecklonii as #3 but I've searched the lists but it does not appear.

It is a lovely flower with leaves like a gladiola of some kind.

General Discussion / Re: Telos rare bulbs purchases

Telos is a great place to order from. All of their stock is top notch.  I have a beautiful if crowded bulb garden derived  almost entirely from their catalog.  I highly recommend browsing their online catalog and splurging!

With all of the rain we have had this year and a couple inches more predicted this weekend the Brunsvigias and Boophones have really grown.

Mystery Bulbs / Popped up in my garden.

I guess it has been growing there for a while.  This is the first time it has bloomed.  It appears to be a Nerine

I went from Modesto to the top.  Seemed the wind was in front of me both ways...  That was 40 years ago.

I've had this one for over 15 years and for the past 5 years or so has flowered erratically at various times and leaf stages.  It has ruffled leaves much like the much larger B. haemanthoides in the background but the leaves are recurved and as you can see reach the ground.  The flower size is smaller than other Boophones I have.  Could it be a Aus?
