Well, risotto can be made in a lot of different ways, but saffron is one of the best, a northern Italy regional variant.
As for growing it in a pot, there is an old man (my father) which threatens with his shovel every spot in the garden without a noticeable plant, so my best chance of protecting those who go dormant is to move pots around.
And Sardinia is actually considered a poor region, but I believe saffron to be produced here for at least a century, being it fundamental in many recipes of traditional festive sweets.

The last Crocus sativus
of the pot. Seems I now have enough for a serious risotto.

Quote from: Diane Whitehead on October 26, 2024, 06:51:28 PMSome bearded iris are classified as "rebloomers".  Did yours bloom in the spring?
It did, as it did last year, with no reblooming. They could very well be a rebloomer tough, even if we had peaks of 28°C in late October.

A strange season here in Sardinia. While my sternbergias are getting closer to the end of their flowering, my bearded Irises "dreamed of spring", and started to bud.

I was unsure if I wanted it in my garden or not, and now I'm even more unsure about it ;D But here a Scadoxus Multiflorus. All the others I've seen around had the leaves out at the momento of blooming, but it's a bit late after all so who knows?

Lilies season! The Madonna lily being the most beautiful of them all. And I finally acquired a Sprekelia which flowered in a month or so after planting and it's showing signs of division already. Hemerocallis hybrids "Crimson Pirate" and "Stella de Oro" are flowering together for the first time.

Well of course, but there's no way you can mistake those for Ornithogalum. Maybe just a whitish Ipheion

I have a quick and easy method for telling allium and ornithogalum apart, which is smell: if you break a tiny bit of a leaf, allium smells of...well...garlic, while ornithogalum smells of...grass.

Chasmanthe Floribunda in full flowering. Quite common around here and a bit weedy but in mass finds it's raison d'etre, doesn't it?
