Banana slugs

Our large native slug, the banana slug, is generally not a problem in local gardens, not being a generalist feeder on seeds, seedlings and flowers of nonnative species.

I have seen them eating garden plants, true, but only the diseased or dying plants, never bulbs, or other desired garden plants. This species is the main reason I do not use widespread slug baits in my garden, only around plants I want to protect, while I am rethinking how seriously I want to grow them. : ) Chocolate slugs are another story, haven’t found anything they will not eat, including flowers of Kniphofia. One damp summer morning a few years ago I found more than 10 of them dining on the fresh flowers at the tops of the stalks. I went for table salt immediately.

Would like to know the dissertation on Ariolimax columbianus (author, university, title of dissertation) so others can look at how to access it.

Thanks,
Kathleen
