The semitransparent part is the contractile root portion. The new bulblets often form at the top of this, with the original bulb at the bottom. The contractile root eventually withers away.

Chad and Kristin,

It’s interesting.  I never had any rust issue in Southern California.  I moved to Marin County in December.  Lots of rainy days this winter.

The particular Oxalis plant has clear transparent white color tear shape bulb or fat root.
