Jane, while true dormice and voles are both rodents, they belong to different zoological families: dormice in the Gliridae and voles in the Cricetidae. The house mouse and the Norwegian rat belong to yet a third family, the Muridae. Dormice are all Old World in distribution; cricetids occur in both the Old World and the New World. True dormice are the ones the Romans ate, although rodents in general are eaten by humans worldwide.
