I grow C. bulbocodium and C. x powellii in my yard, in formerly sunny spaces that now get only a few hours of sun per day. Every fall I saw the leaves off near the top of the bulbs during cleanup, largely to reduce snail/slug hiding spaces. This does not seem to impact their vigor at all. They come right back again the next year.
