Coco Coir

Normally you think of a given species having a reasonably compact native
habitat but coconuts are an exception. Their native habitat is all tropical
beaches, as they can float viably in the oceans for several years until they
wash up onto another beach. So, it shouldn't be too surprising if they were
generally contaminated by salt.

My understanding was that the salt made its way into the coir during the
processing. Some thoroughly wash the coir prior to use.
