Growing South African bulbs under glass in Pacific Northwest

Sarah and Gordon,

Another area to think about is the eastern Cape, especially between Mossel
Bay and Port Elizabeth. Much of that area gets rain throughout the year, so
the bulbs from it will be less likely to rot in the summer. The trick is
that temps there are pretty mild, so you'll be best off with bulbs that grow
in upland areas where it gets frosty.

I haven't spent much time trying to figure out that climate because I have
trouble growing plants from there, so I can't make specific recommendations.
But there's a South African wildflower guide called Eastern Cape, by John
Manning. It has a large section of bulb illustrations. There are only a few
Moraeas, but lots of beautiful species Glads, and a wide selection of
Amaryllids. You might want to check it out.

Good luck!
