I've sown seeds into damp soilless mix in ziplocks for years, but I sort them into varying conditions according to Deno and my own experience.

Some in the light, some in the dark, inside, or outside, perhaps a certain length of time at one temperature and then at another.

One example: Lilium. Some germinate really fast in an unheated room and put up green leaves, others form tiny bulbs if first kept in a warm drawer, and then put up leaves when brought out into the light.

"Usually pretty fast" - well, definitely not some colchicum species. I've had some germinate after 8 years.
