Canna flaccida, seed viability

Hi Dennis,
I bet you will have good luck with the hibiscus also, they tend to have hard coated seeds as well although they are a lot smaller than cannas.  Both tend to germinate best when scarified.  For future reference, storing seeds in the fridge (no freezing needed) often prolongs their lives substantially, I have pulled seeds from when the Botanical Society of SA was still giving free seeds to overseas members (and that was maybe 15 years ago or so, maybe someone else out there remembers better than I) out of the fridge and had anywhere from some to very good germination with most that I have tried.
 
Ernie in Briarcliff Manor NY where we await the noreaster rolling in for Saturday.  A lone snowdrop has a bowed head outside, but the oxalis, pelargoniums and SAfrican bulbs are doing fine downstairs in the cool garage with lights, with some flowers and more to come.
