The timing of SA bulb growth is a multi-faceted process.  There are triggers that are both internal and external that initiate a bulb to go into dormancy and into growth.

Many geophytes need the dormant period to initiate flower production.

There are ways of manipulating a growth cycle but I think it requires both temperature and light control.
