"where do u draw the line i wonder?" -Steven Hart

This is a good question, one well worth considering. On our "What is a Bulb?" page in the Table of Contents, four questions are posed as qualifying factors to consider when including species to the wiki: Does it have a bulb, tuber, corm, etc.? Does it go dormant? Is it in a family/genis of mostly "bulbs"? Is it grown by PBS members and treated like a "bulb"?

Answering yes to any one of these questions validates the species, according to the PBS guidelines. But there are many "bulbous" plants that gardeners would not be likely to grow intentionally, like noxious weeds and some types of grasses, etc. However, many species are included in our wiki that are rarely grown in horticulture or gardens, because of either rarity or difficulty (low survival in cultivation, or something). How specific can we be without boxing ourselves in?

Early in January, a similar question to "what is a bulb?" was posed by the Native Plant Society of Oregon, except the question was, "What is Native?" Should a specific date be important (I.e. arrival of European settlers) or a significant change to climate and geography (glaciations or extreme volcanic episodes)? Should a "native" need to have evolved with fellow natives? What about Native American and animal distribution of plants to other areas? Where do you draw the line?

In my opinion, to consider what should count as a "bulb", the rules are best left vague, with room for a little careful judgment. The rule could have said "monocots only" but that would also exclude many of the genera we currently represent on the wiki. So too would a rule that required every addition to have a clearly defined bulb, corm, tuber, or rhizome with no exceptions, with the same consequences. An open mind (and open definition of what a "bulb" is) will serve us best, I think, without getting out of hand.

Keeping it simple, and broadly defined, is what I love about the Pacific Bulb Society, and I do love it.
