Castillejas (paintbrushes) are hemi-parasites; some years ago a method was developed to grow these species from seed: Sow fescue (grass) seeds over a flat of potting soil, grow the grass so that it is well established (3-6 months), then sow Castilleja seeds among the fescue plants.
