Symplocarpus foetidus (closer to bulbous than cardamine)

How is this plant "closer to bulbous" than Cardamine? The illustrations
I've found show a minimal rootstock and average-looking perennial roots. It
doesn't seem any more geophytic than a goldenrod or a cattail. It does
remind me of this geophytic aroid, though:
